Water damage questions, answered plainly
Most questions come down to four things: what to do first, how the drying is decided, how the price is set and what the insurer will ask for. The answers below are short. Each links to the page that explains the detail.
- Raccoon River flood cleanup
- Flood-water extraction and pumping
- Insurance claim documentation

First steps and safety
Where is the main water shut-off?
Often in the basement, in a mechanical room near the water meter or where the line enters the house. If you cannot find it, call and ask for help finding it.
Is it safe to walk into a flooded basement?
Not until the power to the area is confirmed off or the water is well clear of live equipment. Stay out of standing water near the panel, outlets and appliances.
What if the water is sewage?
Leave the area, keep others out and call. Sewage is handled as contaminated, with protective equipment and removal of porous materials.
Drying and the work
How do you know when the house is dry?
When moisture readings on each material reach the dry level set at the start and hold over more than one visit. Appearance is not the test.
Do you tear out the drywall?
Only where readings show moisture inside the wall and the drywall cannot be dried in place. Cuts are shown to you before they are made.
Can I do the drying myself?
Household fans can move air, but they do not replace measured drying equipment. Ask the crew before you place any fan or dehumidifier.
Price and claims
Why does the site show no prices?
Water damage cost is set by depth, materials, time and water type, which are measured on site. The price is confirmed before any work starts.
What does an insurer usually ask for?
Photographs, readings, the written scope, a list of removed items and invoices. The insurer decides the claim under the policy.
Where do I complain about an Iowa claim?
The Iowa Insurance Division takes complaints about policies issued in Iowa. Its online form is the preferred route.
